Tribeca Film Festival

by Diego

The film festival circuit is full of commercial events travestied in a mask of indie legitimacy. The Tribeca Film Festival is one of them. Not that they aren't showing good films, it's just that the artistic intentions are, at best, tainted by mercenary interest (at $18 per film ticket and $25 per film talk this really must be tailored for Tribeca loft residents only). Last time I checked film festivals were supposed to give space to those niche movies that studios scoffed at and the general public would otherwise not be able to see. I am having a hard time believing that's the case of "Spider Man 3", which is having its premiere at Tribeca.

Still, the BGA uncovered the gay stuff you can watch at the festival this year, here's the cream of the crop:

* "Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother", dir. Matthew Barbato: this documentary follows the journey of Rosanna, David and Patricia Arquette's tranny brother -- in his process of getting gender reassignment surgery. Shows Tuesday, May 1 at 10:30pm, Thursday, May 3 at 11pm and Friday, May 4 at 4pm.

* "On The Down Low", dir. Abigail Child: a doc about four African-American men from Cleveland, Ohio, who are about to come out. Shows Thursday, May 3, at 10:45 pm.

* "The Workshop", dir. Jamie Morgan: a look into a workshop that promotes sexual adventure - and the existence of aliens. The program book labels is "Mature Audiences Only", which is always a good thing. Shows Saturday, May 5, at midnight.

* "The Bubble", dir. Eytan Fox: Three roommates treat their hip Tel Aviv neighborhood like their own chic paradise, relatively sheltered from Israeli-Palestinian conflicts. But when an Israeli boy meets an Palestinian boy at a border checkpoint, this artificial bubble bursts. From the director of the great gay classic "Yossi & Jagger". Shows Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 pm and Wednesday, May 2, at 4 pm.

* "The Polymath, or the Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany, Gentleman", dir. Fred Barney Taylor. A portrait of science fiction writer and renaissance African-American artist and teacher Samuel R. Delany includes vivid tales of his sexual escapades in this experimental documentary.
Shows Thursday, May 3 at 10:45pm.
